イントロ

Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today I’m going to introduce a scene from the movie Ghost that I think is useful for studying English.

I think you’ve probably seen this movie, it’s pretty famous. It came out in 1990, and the main actors were: Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg.

Wikipedia says it’s a romantic drama-fantasy-thriller film.

I like Ghost. It’s pretty funny and romantic. And sad. I don’t know how anyone could watch it without bawling their eyes out.

One thing about it always annoyed me though, that’s how in the pottery scene their hands suddenly get clean.

The scene we’re going to do today is the scene where Sam takes Oda Mae to the bank to withdraw the money. Sam is a ghost, ah, if you haven’t seen the movie. And Sam used to work at this bank, so he knows all the people that work there. And he tells Oda Mae what to say to the bank guy. And so the bank guy thinks that he must have met Ota Mae at a Christmas party when he was really drunk so he can’t remember. And it’s pretty funny.

And I think this conversation is a good one to study how people make small talk in English.

Kia Ora, in Stick News today, two women in New Zealand had to be hospitalised after a restaurant accidentally served them dishwashing liquid instead of wine.

　ニュージーランドのレストランで、ワインの代わりに間違って出された食器洗剤を飲んだ二名の女性が入院する騒ぎが起きました。

Last year a woman went to restaurant in Queenstown and ordered a glass of mulled wine.
The New Zealand Herald reported she immediately spat the drink out after noticing a burning sensation around her lips and mouth.
A worker at the café then test the drink and immediately suffered a similar but more extreme reaction.
Management then discovered that the mulled wine container had been filled with dishwashing liquid.
The company has pleaded guilty to selling food containing an extraneous matter which caused injury. They will be sentenced next month.

　昨年この女性は、クイーンズタウンのレストランへ行き、ぶどうワインをオーダーしました。
　ニュージーランド・ヘラルドはレポートで、この女性は唇と口内に焼けるような感覚があり、反射的にワインを吐いた、としました。
　このカフェの従業員が試しに飲んでみると、似たような苦しみと同時に、更に極端なリアクションをしました。
　後に管理者が発見したのは、ワイン・コンテナーに入っていた食器用洗剤でした。
　同レストランは、無関係な物質を含む食品を売ることが事故の原因となった事の罪を認め、翌月に判決がおりました。

Word Of The Day

Today’s word is ditto.

Ditto is an informal word used instead of a particular word or phrase, to avoid repeating it.

There’s a couple in the movie Ghost and whenever the girl says I love you, instead of saying I love you back, the guy says ditto.

Furgeson
Well ... wonderful.

Sam
Tell him you've been wondering how they did on the Gibraltar securities.
　Gibraltar証券の件がどうなったか気になっていると言え。

Oda Mae
I was just wondering, how did you do on the Gibraltar securities?
　ちょっと気になっていたんですが、Gibraltar証券の件はどうなりましたか？

Furgeson
The Gibraltar securities! Well, it looks like we topped out on that one, huh?
　Gibraltar証券！　あれで我々はかなり美味しい思いが出来ましたよね？

Sam
"We sure did!"
　「はい、そうでしたね！」

Oda Mae
We sure did.
　はい、そうでしたね。

Furgeson
That was a very useful tip.
　あの予想はとても役立ちました。

Sam
"Good old Randy".
　「ランディー老人のおかげ」

Oda Mae
Good old Randy. Got a good old head on his shoulders.

Sam
"Her" shoulders.

Oda Mae

Furgeson
Her shoulders. So what, um, what brings you here today?

Oda Mae
