Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.
The video I recommend today is an instructional video about how to open a bottle with one hand. The guy in the video only has one hand, so the video is partly to help people who only have one hand. But as he says in the description, it’s also useful for “people who want to be ready for the worst-case scenario that they suddenly have only one free hand and have to dismantle a bomb that is hidden inside a bottle!”

I think the video is interesting partly because his delivery is quite entertaining.

And the main reason why I recommend studying English with this video is because following instructions and giving instructions is a very important part of learning English. And it doesn’t matter if the actual information isn’t always directly useful for you – you can still pick up some useful language and grammar structures.

Kia Ora, in Stick News today, an American boy who wore the same shirt every day for four years has finally changed his shirt.

　４年間毎日同じシャツを着続けたアメリカ人の男子がついに、そのシャツを変えました。

In 2003, a seven-year-old boy called David was given a football jersey for Christmas.
It was the number 4 jersey for an American football team from Wisconsin called the Green Bay Packers.
David put the jersey on and continued wearing it every day until his twelfth birthday.
He wore the jersey for a total of 1,581 days and took it off on the 24th of April 2008.

　2003年、デイビッドという７才の男の子はクリスマスプレゼントで、アメフトのジャージをもらいました。
　それはウィスコンシン州のグリーン・ベイ・パッカーズというアメフトチームのジャージで背番号は４でした。

Word Of The Day

Today’s word is willy-nilly.

This is an adverb which doesn’t have anything to do with anything else in today’s show ... I just heard it on a podcast a couple of days ago and I remembered how much I like this word.

Willy-nilly has a couple of meanings. I only ever use it to mean: haphazardly or randomly, at random, indiscriminately, arbitrarily, every which way.

Here’s an example of how you can use willy-nilly from the headline of a blog entry.

Isn’t it strange how you try opening a jar for ages and as soon as you give it to someone else they can open it straight away?
　一生懸命やっても開かない蓋が、いざ他の人に渡してやってもらうとすぐに開くのって奇妙だと思わない？

Sarah
Mmm. You’re probably just weak.
　うーん、ただお前が弱いから。

Kim
Doesn’t it happen to you?
　お前にはこの経験はないのかね？

Sarah
Yeah, yeah, I’m just kidding. There’s a reason for that though.
　あるある、ふざけただけ。　理由はあると思うよ。

Kim
Because you get tired and the second person is fresh.
　初めの人は疲れているけど、二人目は力があるから。

Sarah
Yeah, exactly.
　その通り。

Kim
And you’ve already weakened the ... what do you call it?
　それをやるのにもう力を使い果たしてしまって、、、、それって何て言うんだっけ？

Sarah
Yeah, you’ve weakened the vacuum, or seal or whatever. But it’s not just that, I also think it might be kind of psychological too.
　蓋を開けるのに力を使い果たして、かな。　分かるけどそれだけじゃないと思うな。　心理的な作用もあると思うな。

Kim
What do you mean?
　そのココロは？

Sarah
Well, the second person knows how satisfying it will be to be able to open the jar when the first person couldn’t ... and that desire releases a kind of adrenalin type thing which gives them extra strength.
　最初の人が開ける事の出来なかった蓋を開けることが出来れば、どれだけ満足感に浸れるか、二人目は知っているんですね。　その欲望を満たそうとするので、アドレナリンみたいなモノの効果でプラスαのパワーが得られるんじゃないかな。

One handed tricks: Opening Bottles

A lot of people have a hard time opening bottles, whether it’s because of arthritis, cerebral palsy, weak joints, or whether like me, you’ve just got one hand.
Now, normally with a bottle, I can get my hook around it, but with these larger bottles, or a bottle that’s really stuck, it’s just, it’s too hard to do.
So, what I like to do is get these rubber, um, gripping pads. You can get these at any dollar store, they’re very cheap. And, ah, put it down on the table. If it’s just a normal bottle, you should be able to get it off really easily. If it’s a bottle that’s really, ah, really tight, here’s what you can do, use the same grip. Put it in your elbow. Of course, if you don’t have an elbow, use your shoulder.
Put the bottle on top. Another grip on the other side. And with that solid grip right there, that kind of three point contact. You can open up just about any bottle. That’s a better grip than you can even get with your hand. And just open it up.
One tip though, make sure when you’re opening it like this, hold it back as far as possible, you don’t want to spill whatever you’ve got in the bottle, down on to the table or on to yourself.
Remember, you can do it, you just have to find a way.
