Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today I recommend a song called Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne – I think that’s how you say her name, I’m not quite sure.

The song was released in February 2007 and the video is now the second most viewed video of all time on YouTube. It’s been viewed over 80 million times. So, it might not be your thing – but a lot of people obviously like it.

Avril Lavigne is a pop punk singer, musician, fashion designer and actress.

The song Girlfriend is pretty easy to understand. It’s about a girl who likes a guy and thinks that he should get rid of his current girlfriend and be with her.

Cutting out the “hey hey, you you” parts, the start of the start goes like this:

　I don't like your girlfriend
　I think you need a new one
　I could be your girlfriend
　I know that you like me
　You know it's not a secret
　I want to be your girlfriend

One line that I quite like is this: She's like so whatever.
Which means: she is boring or not interesting or no good.

And I also quite like the line: Hell yeah, I'm the motherfucking princess.

Which is actually cut out of some of the versions of the songs, which I think is a shame, because I think it quite nicely captures her whole image of being kind of bad-girl sexy rather than good-girl sexy, if that makes sense.

And it seems that people who bought the album in Japan have been ripped off. As it says in Wikipedia: The Japanese version of this song replaces the word motherfucking with the phrase: one and only.

Kia Ora, in Stick News today 11 people in Japan were slightly injured when an escalator going up suddenly stopped and moved downward.

昇りエスカレーターが突如停止し、逆に下り始めたことにより11名の方が怪我を負いました。

This morning at about 8:15 at a subway station in Nagoya, Japan, an escalator going up suddenly stopped and moved downward.
Mainichi Newspaper reported that 11 people between the ages of 25 and 59 were slightly injured.
The Nagoya Municipal Government's Transportation Bureau said it is unsure why it moved downward.
Local police are now questioning the people responsible for the maintenance of the escalator.

今朝８時１５分頃、名古屋の地下鉄に通じる昇りエスカレーターが突然停止し、逆に下り始めました。
毎日新聞によると25才から59才までの、合わせて11名が負傷しました。
　名古屋市交通局はなぜこのように逆送したのか、今のところ分かっていないとのことです。
　警察は現在、エレベーターの管理会社に事情を聞いています。
