Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.
A couple of weeks ago I went to a gig in Kutchan and I really enjoyed it. It was the first time I’d seen live music in quite a while. It was an artist called KGM. And he played the guitar and sang.

　数週間前、倶知安でとても楽しいライブがありました。　最近、ライブで音楽を聴いていなかったので今回は本当に久しぶりでした。　アーティストはKGM と言います。　ギターを弾きながら歌いました。

He’s from Sendai and this was his first time performing in Hokkaido and his first time performing in a skateboard bowl too.

　KGM は仙台出身で北海道でのライブは初めてで、スケート・ボウルでのライブも初めてでした。

A woman called Chihiro also sang with him she had a beautiful voice and she sang a Bob Marley song too which was awesome.

　KGM と一緒に歌った美しい声の主は千尋で、彼女のボブ・マーリーの歌もすごかったです。

After the concert they kindly agreed to do an interview.　And I asked them some questions in my broken Japanese.
The first thing I asked KGM was: How long have you been playing the guitar?

　コンサートの後、二人は快くインタビューに応じてくれました。　そこで私のブロークンな日本語でいくつか質問をしてみました。
　まずはKGMに質問しました。　「ギターを弾き初めてどれくらいですか？」

　「ギターは中学生から、１２～１３才からずっと弾いてはいるんですけどね。」
I’ve been playing the guitar since I was at junior high school, since I was about 12 or 13.

Kia Ora, in Stick News today a 67-year-old woman faces negligence charges after a hit and run in Tokyo that left an elderly woman with a broken leg.

　お年寄りの女性がひき逃げされ骨折した事件で、警視庁浅草署と交通捜査課は67才の女を重過失傷害と道交法違反（ひき逃げ）容疑で東京地検に書類送検しました。

Since last July, it’s been illegal to ride bicycles on most footpaths in Japan.
A 67-year-old woman has just been charged with gross negligence resulting in injury and violation of the Road Traffic Law.
In January, she was riding a bicycle on the footpath in Asakusa, Tokyo when she hit an 84-year-old woman who was walking.
The 84-year-old was on her way to visit Sensoji Temple and suffered a broken leg in the accident but Mainichi news reports the woman on the bicycle failed to stop to help her and fled the scene.
The 67-year-old told police she was in a hurry to go to a karaoke bar.

　去年の７月から日本では道路交通法が改正され、自転車で歩道を走行するのは、ほとんどの歩道でルール違反となりました。
　67才の女に最近、重過失傷害と道交法違反（ひき逃げ）の容疑がかけられています。
　今年の１月、浅草でこの女は歩道を自転車で走行していたところ、歩いていた84才の女性と接触しました。
　84才のこの女性は浅草寺へ行く途中でこの事故に遭い、足を骨折する重傷を負いましたが、毎日新聞によると、自転車の女は止まらずその場を逃げ去りました。
　67才の自転車の女は警察の調べに対し、カラオケに行くために急いでいたと話しました。

　１曲作るのにどれくらいかかりますか？

KGM
　すごいかかるやつは３年かかって、すぐ出来るのは一日で出来る。　バラバラですね。
The songs that take ages, three years and ones that I do quickly, I can write in a day. It really depends.

Sarah
Are the audiences very different in the places you’ve played?
　コンサートの場所によって観客に違いはありますか？

KGM
　それぞれ土地（によって）、色が違うんですよね。　　北海道はシャイなんだけど元気な感じかな。　仙台はシャイなんですよ、とにかく。　で、西の方に行くと、シャイがどこにあるのってくらいに「わっしゃー」って言ってるんですね。　北海道は聞きつつも元気だなー、暖かい感じですかね。
Yeah, the atmosphere is different depending on the area.　Hokkaido audiences seem shy but also lively.　Sendai audiences are just shy.　And if you go to the West Coast, they’re not at all shy. They’re like, “woo hoo”.　In Hokkaido they listen carefully and they’re enthusiastic, they’re warm.

How much do you use the internet to help your music career?
　ご自身の音楽を広めるに当たり、インターネットをどのように活用されていますか？

KGM
　東京じゃないところに住んでいる自分としては、すごくありがたくて、東京が発信したネットの情報に飲まれずに自分から積極的に動けば、これは絶対にプラスだなって思いますね。　すごく重要な。　何て言うんだろう、ちゃんとツールとして活用していきたいなと思いますね。　すごいです。　ネットはすごいです。
I don’t live in Tokyo, so I really appreciate it.　There’s a lot of information on the internet, but I think if you put the effort in, it’s possible to use it to promote yourself.　It’s very important. I really want to use it to help my career. The internet is great.

What’s your dream?
目標は？

KGM
　ちゃんと自分の好きな歌を歌って、それでいてCDもちゃんと広がって、ていう状況。　妥協ナシで。　ライフスタイルとして本当に好きな音楽を続けるために、色んな事をやっていきたいな思います。
I want to keep singing what I want to sing and selling my CDs, keeping true to myself and not selling out.　I want to try many different things so that I can keep making the music I want to make.

How long have you been singing?
　どれくらい歌手をされていますか？

Chihiro
　ちっちゃい頃から歌うのは好きだったんですけど、ちゃんと人前で歌うようになったのは大学に入ってから、周りの仲間とクラブイベントとかをやって、そこからですかね。
I’ve enjoyed singing since I was a child, but I didn’t start singing in front of people until when I was at university. I started out performing with friends at events at clubs and it went from there.

Are you a Bob Marley fan?
　ボブ・マーリーが好きですか？

Chihiro
　そうですね、３年くらい前に神奈川県の湘南の方の葉山っていう所があるんですけど、そこの海の家で毎年やっていた「ボブ・マリー　ソングスデー」っていうのがあって、エントリーをして、バンドが固定で決まっていて、それでボブの曲をエントリーしてみんなが歌っていて、優勝するとジャマイカのチケットをもらえるんですね。
で、それに出てチケットをもらうことが出来て、そこから色んな出会いが広がったし、そのきっかけも大きかったので、自分の中では色んなメモリアルな曲とかあったりしますね。
Yes. Three years ago, in Kanagawa, at a place called Hayama, in Shonan, they have an event there every year called Bob Marley Songs Day. And I entered the contest. They have a band and the contestants can sing any Bob Marley song they like. And if you win, the prize is a trip to Jamaica.
And I entered the contest and ended up getting the trip to Jamaica. I met a lot of people through that.
It was a great opportunity and a wonderful experience so a lot of Bob’s songs bring back memories of that time.

How was Jamaica?
　ジャマイカはどうでしたか？

Chihiro
　自分としては南国でゆったりしているのかと思ったら、そうでもなくて、けっこうみんな、良い意味でもハングリーだったりして、すごくパワフルっていうかエネルギーがすごくあって元気な国だなっていうのがすごくあって、でもやっぱり音楽が本当に身近に溢れている。
　平気で住宅地とかでも、一晩中すごい大きな音を出してイベントやっていたりとか、そこら中でやっているような国で、それはすごく驚きました。
I thought it would be a very laid-back place because it’s a tropical island. But it wasn’t really. Everyone was hungry, in a good way. They were really full of life and energy and I thought it was a really vibrant country. And wherever you went you could hear music.
Even in residential areas they had all-night parties with really loud music. That was going on everywhere and that really surprised me.

サラのメモ：
Today's guests are KGM and Chihiro - they are musicians who had a gig here in Niseko recently. I really enjoyed their music as well as talking to them afterwards.

Sometimes I interview people in Japanese. I can't do it as well as in English (of course) - partly because I can't always understand the nuance of their answers. But I always learn something new during the interview and when translating. So I definitely recommend interviewing someone as a way to help your English.

If you speak Japanese, feel free to leave a comment saying how you would have translated something differently. There are usually many ways you can translate the same thing and it's interesting to hear how other people would translate it.
