Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re looking at another scene from Titanic.
This scene is near the start of the move, it’s the first time Rose and Jack talk the day after he saves her. And he asks her if she loves her fiancé and she gets really annoyed.
I think it’s a pretty funny scene.

She says to him: you are rude and uncouth and presumptuous.

Uncouth means pretty much the same thing as rude.
It says here, in the concise Oxford dictionary: lacking good manners, refinement or grace.

presumptuous
adj.
too confident, in a way that shows a lack of respect for other people

The example here is: Would it be presumptuous of me to ask to borrow your car?

And I found an example online. This is from the Wall Street Journal and they’re talking about the United States presidential election. And this is from back before Barack Obama got the nomination and somebody’s saying that he wouldn’t declare victory yet because he was: concerned about appearing presumptuous or antagonistic towards Hillary Clinton.

Kia Ora, this is Stick News. Travellers from the 27 countries whose citizens don’t need visas to enter the United States, will soon be required to register online at least three days before arriving in the country.

The United States Department of Homeland Security is a Cabinet department of the U.S. federal government with the responsibility of protecting the U.S. from terrorist attacks and responding to natural disasters.
Homeland Security has announced that all visitors who are allowed to enter the country without visas will have to register their details online at least three days before they travel.
A spokesperson they will help the United States boost the security of its visa-free travel program by allowing the government to screen visitors before they travel.

Word Of The Day

Today’s word is annoying.

In Titanic, Rose says to Jack: You are so annoying.

Annoying is a pretty common word.

Many things can be annoying:

noises
Interruptions
people’s voices
people’s habits

I did a search for “annoying” and I found a site called Annoying Coworker.
On the site people write messages to their annoying coworkers telling them how annoying they are.

I’ll read you one:

　Ok, so you've graduated from singing like a hyena to tapping your fingers & feet. All your habits are annoying & distracting. You are LOUD and obnoxious. No wonder you don't get any work done; you can't stay still for even a minute. Many of us have told you many times to keep it down, but you still don't. How inconsiderate are you? You're not a kid anymore buddy. While I'm at it, STOP WHISTLING too!

Jack
Do you love him?
　彼を愛しているか？

Rose
Pardon me?
　失礼ですが？

Jack
Do you love him?
　彼を愛しているのか？

Rose
You’re being very rude. You shouldn’t be asking me this.
　あなたは無礼です。　その様な質問はしないものです。

Jack
Well it’s a simple question. Do you love the guy or not?
　そうかな、これは単純な質問なんだけどな。　その男を愛しているのか？愛していないのか？

Rose
This is not a suitable conversation.
　これは適切な会話ではありません。

Jack
Why can’t you just answer the question?
　なんで質問に答えられないんだ？

Rose
This is absurd. You don’t know me and I don’t know you and we are not having this conversation at all. You are rude and uncouth and presumptuous.
And I am leaving now. Jack, Mr Dawson, it’s been a pleasure. I sought you out to thank you and now I have thanked you.

I am. You are so annoying. Wait, I don’t have to leave. This is my part of the ship. You leave.
　行きますとも。　あなたには本当にイライラさせられます。　そうだ、私が行かなくてもいいんだわ。　ここは私の場所だから、あなたが行きなさい。

Jack
Oh, well, well, well, now who’s being rude?
　おーっと、無礼なのはどっちか分からなくなってきたぞ。
