Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today I’d like to talk about a song I found on YouTube called Red Sky at Night.
It’s by a guy called Kris Rowley. I think that’s how you pronounce his name.

I really like his voice.

The song, I think, is about a guy who’s in a relationship and he’s having troubles in his relationship but he’s saying to his partner, I’m going to try harder, and it’s going to get better, so please don’t leave.

He says: I'm working on plans to succeed, if you just give me time...

The song starts like this:

　Red sky at night, shepherd's delight
　But our forecast is bleak for the morning

This is a variation of the saying which goes something like this:

　Red sky at night, shepherd's delight,
　Red sky in the morning, sailor's warning.

Which means that if the sky is red at night time, it’s probably going to be a nice day the next day, but if the sky is red in the morning, it’s probably going to rain.

Kia Ora, in Stick News today a convicted spammer in the United States is now fighting anti-spam laws.

Jeremy Jaynes was once listed as the eighth most prolific spammer in the world.
According to Wikipedia, he stole email lists and sent hundreds of thousands of emails per day from his home in North Carolina.
Jaynes may have earned up to $750,000 per month, and amassed a personal fortune estimated at $24,000,000.
In 2005, he was sentenced to 9 years in prison.
The Associated Press reported he was the first person in the United States to be convicted of a felony for sending unsolicited bulk email.
Now his lawyer is urging the Virginia Supreme Court to change a state anti-spam law, arguing it violates free speech protections under the US constitution.

Today’s word is bleak.

This is what the Concise Oxford Dictionary says about the word bleak:

(of a situation) not hopeful or encouraging
(of the weather) cold and unpleasant
(of a place) bare, empty or with no pleasant features

There’s also a fish called bleak. I wonder if it’s a sad fish.

In Japanese there’s a kind of chant to help you learn.
　日本では呪文のように繰り返し唱えて覚えるんだよ。

Sarah
Oh, really? I didn’t know that.
　へー、本当？　知らなかったわ。

Jun
How about in English?
　英語では？

Sarah
No, there’s nothing like that.
　英語にはそーゆーの無いよ。

Jun
How do you learn them?
　じゃあどうやって習うの？

Sarah
I don’t know. Just stare at a piece of paper or write them out or say them over and over ... I can’t really remember.
　分かんない。　ただ紙に書かれた九九を繰り返し眺めたり書いたり言ったりしたんだと思う。　ごめん、あまりよく覚えてない。

That sounds hard.
　大変そうだね、それ。

Sarah
I don’t remember it being hard though. I remember thinking it was easy.
　大変だったという記憶は無いけどね。　簡単だったという記憶ならある。

Jun
Maybe you were a genius.
　あなたはもしかすると天才かも。

Sarah
Yeah, that’s probably it. I’m a mathematical genius.
　うん、自分でもそうだと思う。　私は数学の天才です。

Jun
OK, what’s 8 times 9?
　よし、じゃあ８×９は？

Sarah
