Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today’s movie is Scent of a Woman. Scent of a Woman came out in 1992. I was at high school when it came out and I remember watching it at the cinema in my hometown – which was probably a year or two after it came out everywhere else.

I think it’s a great film – and one of the best parts is Al Pacino’s speech near the end, he’s brilliant.
And I think the speech is great to study because it’s full of idioms and colourful language.
For example: a crock of shit.
He says: This is such a crock of shit!
He’s talking about the situation – where the headmaster of the school is trying to bribe one of the students into telling him something.
A crock is a kind of pot, so a crock of shit literally means a pot full of shit, but it’s slang which means: something considered to be complete nonsense.
So it’s like saying: this is crazy, or this is ridiculous.
It’s classified as vulgar slang, so be careful if you use that.
The character saying that used to be in the army, so he always uses language like that, but it’s not considered appropriate in that formal setting, so the principal says:
Please watch your language, Mr. Slade. You are in the Baird school, not a barracks.
Watch your language or mind your language – is an idiom which means:
To be careful about what you say in order not to upset or offend sb.

Mr. Trask
I'm going to recommend to the Disciplinary Committee ... that you be expelled.Mr. Simms, you area cover-up artist ... and you are a liar.
Frank Slade
But not a snitch!
Mr. Trask
Excuse me?
Frank Slade
No, I don't think I will.
Mr. Trask
Mr. Slade.
Frank Slade
This is such a crock of shit!
Mr. Trask
Please watch your language, Mr. Slade. You are in the Baird school, not a barracks. Mr. Simms, I will give you one final opportunity to speak up.
Frank Slade
Mr. Simms doesn't want it. He doesn't need to be labeled ... "still worthy of being a Baird man." What the hell is that? What is your motto here? "Boys, inform on your classmates, save your hide; anything short of that, we're gonna burn you at the stake"? Well, gentlemen, when the shit hits the fan, some guys run ... and some guys stay. Here's Charlie facin' the fire, and there's George ... hidin' in big daddy's pocket. And what are you doin'? You're gonna reward George ... and destroy Charlie.
Mr. Trask
Are you finished, Mr. Slade ?
Frank Slade
No, I'm just gettin' warmed up.
