イントロ

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s song is: internet love song by Tom Milsom. It’s a very cute song and he has posted the lyrics next to the video which is very useful.



Let’s look at some of the vocab in the song:

He says: circumflex underscore circumflex. He’s describing an emoticon here.
I had to look up circumflex actually, I wasn’t quite sure what it was.
This ^ is a circumflex. And this ^_^ is the emoticon he’s describing. I’m not even sure what that emotion is supposed to be … love? I’m not much of an emoticon expert.

Later on he sings some abbreviations. You probably know these ones:
LOL – laughing out loud (or a variation of that)
OMG – oh my god
ROFLMAO – rolling on floor laughing my arse off
BRB - I had to look this one up. This means: be right back. I guess people use it when they’re chatting … and I almost never chat online.

One more thing, he uses an idiom later on in the song.
He sings:
We'll pour our hearts out on the screen
One line at a time

To pour your heart out is an idiom which means to tell someone all your problems or your feelings.

 









STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today a woman in Japan has been charged with stealing power after she charged her cellphone at a train station.

On the 19th of August a 20-year-old woman was waiting for her friend at Sagamihara Station in Kanagawa. While she was sending email her battery ran out so she decided to charge the phone using a plug at the station.
A passerby then called the police and the police caught her and charged her with stealing power.
The woman had plugged the phone in for thirty minutes and used .015 watts of power which is worth .03 yen.
According to news reports, the woman is sorry for what she did, but she says everyone does it so she didn’t think she was doing anything wrong.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is heart.
There are a lot of idioms that use the word heart.

If you suddenly feel sad or depressed about something you can say that your heart sinks.
My heart sank when I heard that he had won the election.

If you know something in your heart or your heart of hearts, then you have a strong feeling that it is true.
I knew in my heart of hearts that I was making the wrong decision.

And heart and soul means: with a lot of energy and enthusiasm.
He threw himself heart and soul in to the project.

Oh, man, that is beyond ridiculous.
　あーあ、これはあまりにもバカげている。

Jim
But still, if everyone did it, they might lose a lot of money.
　そうだけど、もしみんながやったらカネを損するよ。

Sarah
No they wouldn’t! It’s not like people think, "Hmm instead of plugging my phone in at home and letting it charge while I’m sleeping, I’m going to walk down to the station and wait for it to charge, so I can save .03 yen". I don’t think so. It’s just in emergencies.
　みんながやるワケないじゃん！　『ケータイ充電を就寝中に充電する代わりに駅まで行ってやったからカネを３銭節約できた』なんて考える人はいないでしょ。　たまたま電池切れしただけだよ。

Jim
It’s still stealing though, isn’t it?
　それでも窃盗には変わりないよね？

Sarah
I don’t think it’s stealing. It’s just using a service. Like using the water or the toilet paper in the toilets.
　私は窃盗だとは思わないな。　サービスを使っただけでしょ。　水を使ったりトイレの紙を使ったりするのと同じように。

Jim
Maybe she was getting in the way.
　もしかして彼女は邪魔だったのかもしれないね。

Sarah
Yeah, if that was the case, I could understand. Like if it was a really crowded station and it was a narrow passageway and her phone was a meter wide. Yeah, that I could understand. But I don’t think that was the case.
　もしそうだったなら納得できるな。　例えば混雑した駅の狭い通路の彼女の巨大なケータイが邪魔だったならね。　うん、そうだったら理解できるな。　でもそんなのあり得ないでしょ。

Jim
I wonder who it was that called the police.
　一体誰が警察に通報したんだろうね。

Sarah
It must have been someone who was seriously anal-retentive. Either that or it was an ex-friend of hers who wanted to get her in trouble.
　病的な潔癖性なやつでしょ。　もしくは彼女がトラブルのを喜ぶ元友だちとか。

Jim
What are people saying about it?
　この件を人はどう言っている？

Sarah
Most of the comments I saw online … people were staying it was ridiculous and joking about it or writing sarcastic comments … but some people actually thought what she did was a serious crime.
　ネット上のコメントしか見ていないけど、ほとんどの人はバカげているとか冗談言ったりとか皮肉ったりしている。　けど深刻な犯罪だという人たちも中にはいる。
