イントロ

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.
This is a cue or a pool cue. It’s spelt c-u-e.
And there is another kind of cue which has the same pronunciation, but a different meaning and a different spelling. Queue, q-u-e-u-e, means: a line of people, cars, etc. waiting for sth or to do sth.
In American English, they say line instead of queue. So if you say queue in North America, they might not know what you mean. In New Zealand I think we say both.
For example: How long were you in the queue?
Or: How long were you in the line?

　これはキュー、またはプール・キューでスペルはc-u-eです。
　そして同音異義語のキューのスペルはq-u-e-u-eで、意味は【（人や車の）列】です。
　米国語ではqueueの代わりにlineと言いますので、もし北米でキューと言っても意味は伝わらないかも知れません。　ニュージーランドでは両方使うと思います。
　例文です。
　　How long were you in the queue?
　もしくは、
　　How long were you in the line?

Queue is also a verb. For example: We had to queue for almost two hours.
The equivalent in America, I think, would be: We had to stand in line for almost two hours.
Or: We had to line up for almost two hours.
You can’t just say line by itself, like: We had to line for almost two hours.
You have to say stand in line or line up.
Although line by itself is a verb, it just means something different. It means: cover the inner surface of sth with a layer of different material.
For example: I made a wooden box and I lined it with cotton.

　Queueは動詞でもあります。　例文として、We had to queue for almost two hours. 【2時間も並ばなくてはならなかった】。
　米国で同じような事を言うなら、We had to stand in line for almost two hours. または We had to line up for almost two hours. となるでしょう。
　ただしlineを単体では使えません。　例えば、（誤） We had to line for almost two hours.
　stand in line または line up と言わなければなりません。
　しかしながらlineは動詞でもありますが違う意味で【内面に異なる素材で覆う】です。
　例文として、I made a wooden box and I lined it with cotton. 【木の箱を作り、綿で裏張りを付けた】。

Kia Ora, this is Stick News. The Canadian Health Ministry has officially said it doesn’t want sexually active gay men to become organ donors. A politician in Ontario says the directive is very insensitive.

　カナダ保健省は、性行為をした同性愛者からの臓器提供は不要だと公式に述べました。　オンタリオ州の政治家はこの指導は非常に鈍感だと切り捨てました。

In December, Health Canada issued a directive to exclude sexually active gay men from becoming organ donors.
The Ontario Health minister, who is openly gay, says the directive is offensive.
He says it was “very insensitive'' of federal officials to make blanket determinations about risk based solely on sexual orientation.
He said the Ontario government agency for organ and tissue donation will aggressively work with the gay community to encourage organ and tissue donations.

　昨年12月、カナダ保健省は性行為をした同性愛者の臓器提供を締め出す指示を刊行しました。
　オンタリオ州の保健大臣（ゲイ公表済み）はこの指示に不快感を表明しました。
　同大臣は、単に性的好みだけに基づき、包括的な決定をする連邦当局は「非常に鈍感」と言いました。
　同大臣は続けて、オンタリオ政府機関は、器官並びに細胞組織移植のためのドナー提供を促すため、同性愛者のコミュニティとともにこれからも積極的に行動を取っていく、とコメントしました。

How have the conditions been recently?
　最近のコンディションはどうですか？

Unfortunately, it’s been really, really nice which means the snow has gotten heavier and wetter because the sun’s out every day. And there’s no new powder to cover up the tracks. So, a few more snowfalls hopefully should clear things up.
　残念ながら、最近までとてもナイスでしたが、天気が良いせいで雪が重く、ぬれてしまっています。　トラックスを消す新しいパウダーが降っていません。　トラックスが消えるくらい、雪が降ってくれればいいんですが。

What’s been the highlight of your season so far?
　今シーズンの今までのハイライトは？

The highlight of the season so far has definitely been the back country. Hiking up and riding down. Just pure, deep, untracked powder. I mean, riding’s fun, but hiking up’s half the fun too.
　今シーズンの今までのハイライトは絶対にバックカントリーです。　ハイクアップして滑り降ります。　ピュアでディープなトラック無しのパウダー。　滑るのも楽しいですが、ハイクアップも楽しいです。

Sarah
Mmmm ... I don’t want to move, these chairs are so comfy.
　動きたくない。　この椅子、心地いい。

Mari
Yeah, they are, aren’t they?
　だよね？

Sarah
I want some chairs like this at home.
　家にこんな椅子があったらいいのに。

Mari
Don’t you have chairs like that at your place?
　自分の家にこんな感じの椅子は無い？

Sarah
No, we only have cushions.
　無いね。　座布団しかない。

Mari
How about in NZ?
　ニュージーランドでは？

Sarah
Yeah, I’ve never seen this kind of chair in New Zealand. In New Zealand people usually have those big ones with legs and sofas.
　いやー、こんな感じの椅子はNZで見たことないね。　NZでは足のついた大きなソファーが一般的だね。

Mari
Houses are big over there aren’t they?
　NZの家って大きいんでしょ？

Sarah
Yeah, they’re generally bigger than in Japan. But there are small houses too. Like the house I grew up in only had 2 bedrooms.
　一般的には日本の家より大きいかも。　だけど小さな家もあるよ。　私が育った家なんか部屋が2つしかなかったんだから。

知らない人が意外と多いですよ。（それとも僕の友達がアホなだけ？）
