Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show. Today we’re studying a song called Stand by Me.
The original version of this song is by Ben King and it was released in 1961. And since then it’s been covered many times.
So, what does it mean to stand by somebody? Well, if you stand next to somebody, then you’re standing by them. But stand by somebodyalso means this: To help sb or be friends with them, even in difficult situations.
When the night has come, and the land is dark And the moon is the only light we’ll see No, I won't be afraid, oh, I won't be afraid Just as long as you stand, stand by me
As long as is an idiom which means provided that, it’s likeif.
In this song, the singer is saying that no matter what scary or terrible or difficult thing happens, I’ll be OK as long as you’re here to support me or help me.
If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fallOr the mountain should crumble to the sea
Tumble is a way of falling. to fall suddenly and in a dramatic way
And crumble means to break into very small pieces.
A guy called Dan owns a job search website called Perk Jobs. On Saturday he promoted the site by becoming a human billboard. He wore a harness and was suspended from a wire fence next to a roundabout in Wellington. Dan said he got plenty of waves and toots and a bit of a wedgie.
And that was Stick News for Friday 19th of June. Kia ora.
